We have two
companion animals, Luna and Kitty, and live in a quiet little neighborhood in downtown
Columbia where the only downside is we can't keep chickens. Austin
is at USC studying Mathematics. I am an
immigration paralegal, which allows me to connect with people from all
over the
world and gives me fresh perspective every day. I wish upon everyone the opportunity to get to
know
immigrants and their unique stories on an intimate level.
I grew up in
an earthy, recycling and fairly minimalist family that emphasized frugality and
conscious consumption. In college, I worked at an outdoor camp for three
years and have never fallen out of love with this beautiful earth that feeds
us, showers us, speaks to us, and sustains us.
We believe that our earth is NOT beyond repair and neither is
humanity. We are all flawed in different ways, but what makes humans special is
the capacity for self-awareness that allows us to better ourselves.
I want to clarify that this initiative is not an exercise in guilt appeasement, nor is this blog meant in any way to be a self-congratulatory pat on the back. My hope is to share what we learn as we become more conscious consumers, and that those who follow along will be able to apply some (or all) of these principles in their own lives. If this challenge stops with us, it will be an exercise in futility. But we all learn from each other. I do hope this spurs others to change their consumption habits. A shift in our collective conscience, and corresponding action, is the only way that the current path of ecological destruction can be rerouted toward a sustainable future. Please consider this a call to action.
